Repair solution for oily and damp environments
June 1st 2008

Belzona Polymerics has launched a new repair solution for applications within oily and damp environments. Belzona 1831 (Super UW-Metal) bonds strongly to oily, wet and manually prepared metal substrates. The company says it has been particularly successful within the power industry.

"The product was initially developed to combat the problems encountered within ageing transmission systems," says Gordon Cairns, national sales manager for Belzona."Outdoor transformer substations subject to erosion corrosion for over 20 years commonly have oil leakage leading to breakdown of fins, flanges, valves, seals and pipe work.Where conventional repair composites would be ineffective at stemming the leaks due to the oil, Belzona 1831 (Super UW-Metal) displaces the oil from the surface so the repair can take place, with minimal production loss." A UK electricity distribution company was faced with a potentially high cost maintenance repair due to oil leakage from transformer pipe work. Belzona 1831 (Super UW-Metal) was applied directly onto the leaking pipe work displacing the oil and bonding aggressively to the contaminated surface. The pipework was then encapsulated in a standard Belzona material and the process took two hours before a return to service.
