GDF and Suez merge to create €74bn company
July 17th 2008

Gaz de France and Suez shareholders of both companies approved the merger between the two firms. GDF Suez will have a workforce of 200,000 employees throughout the world, with 2007 revenues of €74.3bn. The merger becomes effective on 22nd July 2008. The French Government which has a stake of over 80% in Gaz de France will be the biggest single shareholder in the new company at over 35%. The merger will create a major European energy player to rival EDF Energy and E.On.
