Climate change task force meets
January 16th 2007

A band of heavyweight UK firms have come together under the CBI to form a climate change task force. The group, which includes representatives from Tesco's, Shell UK and Corus, aims to establish what steps business can take to help fight climate change – without harming competitiveness.

Following Stern’s call for urgent action, CBI chief Richard Lambert says it’s time to determine how business can take responsibility: "This poses a challenge to business, as a major source of emissions, but it also presents significant opportunities. Business needs to be at the heart of the debate to ensure it can play its role effectively alongside other key players."

BT's Ben Verwaayen, who chairs the group, says the business community needs to take action which is urgent, concrete and measurable. "The CBI has assembled a formidable team of business leaders to set the agenda," he says. "The challenge for the task force is to identify solutions which address the issues of climate change without harming the competitiveness of British business."

The group will produce an independent conclusion and issue a report later this year recommending a course of action.
