Government must get tougher on carbon
August 6th 2007

To tackle climate change effectively, the Government must bring in stricter policies, backed by more stringent laws, according to a panel of MPs and peers.

In response to the publication of the Draft Climate Change Bill, the committee has praised the Government for leading Britain by example, but said this must be supported by further thinking on legal enforceability.

The report raised concerns that a 60% reduction in carbon emissions before 2050 may not go far enough.

Commenting on the publication of the report, Liberal Democrat committee member, David Howarth MP said: "This is a strong report that tackles many of the weaknesses of the draft bill, including the crucial need for meaningful annual targets. But it needs to be even stronger."
