Council gets energy from cider
August 6th 2007

Waste heat from a cider factory is being used by Mendip District Council to heat one of its leisure centres, saving almost £30,000 on energy bills.

The Shepton Mallet Lido is transferring excess heat from the bottling process at the nearby Brothers Drinks factory and using it to supplement the heating of the pool water.

Within days of the system going live, the process was able to increase the temperature of the water by more than 10 degrees. And studies show that in future year's Shepton's lido will be able to get at least 40 per cent of its heat from this new system.

"This is excellent news for a council which has already been recognised as the best in the country at tackling climate change. It proves that we are providing value for money services," comments Mendip Councillor Ron Forrest.
