Make the experts do the saving
August 1st 2008 Many of you will be very familiar with the basics of saving energy and water and reducing the cost base of your company. But this appears not to be the case across the board: the Carbon Trust estimates that UK industry still wastes almost £7 million a day through poor energy efficiency. Large supply companies have an obligation to promote energy efficiency to their customers, yet it is often untapped by many customers. Reasons for this are that they are not interested enough in saving energy i.e. they are too busy with other projects or that they believe getting energy saving advice from a company that makes its money selling energy is like getting dieting tips from McDonalds.
A couple of supply companies that I have met independently suggested that to increase the effectiveness of energy efficiency, the supplier should have a more active role.The price of supply should be fixed and the savings that the energy supply company makes are their own.This would provide a company with a team of experts, and the motivation of profit, to do all that is possible to reduce demand because they are getting all that they are going to get from the supply deal.
Naturally they are many details that would need to be ironed out in such a scheme such as the length of the contract and how to set a fair price at the start. But there is potential in such a scheme.
While on the subject of getting help from experts,The Energy Event is running this this September at the National Motorcycle museum in Birmingham.There are a number of conferences and seminars on energy markets and how to purchase, along with energy and water efficiency advice from a broad range of experts.As Energy Minister,Malcolm Wicks, said recently;“The idea that we can sort it out with solar panels and woolly jumpers is a total fantasy.The world will be burning fossil fuels for some time to come and we have to deal with this.” He is right, so getting the experts on side may make the difference.
