Carbon reduction technology investment boost
February 1st 2009

A £15m joint public sector initiative to tackle CO2 emissions through the development and demonstration of new carbonreducing technologies has been announced this month.

The Technology Strategy Board, Northern Way and Dept of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) are to jointly invest £15m in development and demonstration of new carbonreducing technologies.

Emphasis will be on new technologies that tackle CO2 emissions from power plants and large process industries. New technologies will make major contribution to meeting Government greenhouse gas reduction targets.

In a unique partnership, the government-funded Technology Strategy Board,The Northern Way and the Department of Energy and Climate Change are to jointly invest £15 million in innovative research that will see the development and demonstration of technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel power stations and other CO2 intensive process industries.

Announcing the launch in London the Technology Strategy Board’s Chief Executive, Iain Gray, said:“The challenge is to find cost effective, energy efficient solutions to CO2 reductions that are highly reliable and durable. Carbon Abatement Technologies have the potential to reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuel power stations by up to 90%, and have significant export potential. They will enable power plants and process industries to be part of the solution to climate change, while making a major contribution to security of energy supply and UK wealth creation.”
