New environmental management scheme
June 1st 2006

BSI Management Systems announce the launch of its proprietary new Environmental Management Systems (EMS) scheme called BS 8555 STEMS (Steps to Environmental Management Systems), which enables small to medium size enterprises (SMEs) to implement an Environmental Management System by means of a phased approach. There are six key phases:

  • Commitment and establishing the baseline
  • Identifying and ensuring compliance with legal and other requirements
  • Developing objectives, targets and programmes
  • Implementation and operation of the EMS
  • Checking, audit and management review
  • ISO 14001 or EMAS registration
Because the 'timeout' period is limited to a maximum of two years, the momentum to progress to a full internationally recognised ISO 14001/EMAS registration is maintained. SMEs adopting this approach benefit from being able to spread the cost of implementing ISO 14001/EMAS and is ideal for those without specialist resources.
