Accurate, up-to-date photomap of Wales December 1st 2007 GeoPerspectives has released an accurate, up-to-date aerial photomap of Wales. The detailed, full colour photography covers about 20 000km2 at 25cm resolution.
Captured using new digital camera technology, in partnership with aerial surveying company COWI, the onboard digital sensor also captured infrared imagery for identifying vegetation. Land elevation data too has been extracted from the stereo photography, allowing the creation of a 3D terrain model.
About 7000 individual images of Wales were captured.Using a Vexcel UltraCamD photogrammetric aerial survey camera, both full colour photography and colour infrared imagery were captured simultaneously. This additional image layer is said to match the standard photography and is a useful tool for identifying vegetation (type and state of health).
A highly accurate Digital Terrain Model has also been created from the original data. With individual height values every 5m, each with a positional accuracy of better than 1.5m, this mode, provides a detailed representation of the earth's surface for a wide range of applications, including environmental modelling, flood risk assessment and 3D visualisation.
