Data centre provider Telehouse is a large energy user and by teaming up with EnergyQuote incorporating John Hall Associates has been able to reduce costs and comply with forthcoming legislation

Telehouse offer data centre facilities and connectivity, providing a secure and resilient platform for mission critical IT systems for some of the world's biggest brands. The energy market has been very unpredictable over the past few years, with regards to price and availability. This instability coincided with a contract transition phase for Telehouse and required them to adjust to sudden price increases, with very little warning.

These factors were really affecting Telehouse's growing energy needs brought about by demand from customers for high-capacity services to support improvements in technology.Telehouse is meeting this demand with the introduction of its newest facility,Telehouse West.

The data centre offers the same capacity of Telehouse North and Telehouse East combined and draws 2KVA of power per rack.

Suzanne Lee, senior manager at Telehouse said,"The very nature of the global data centre business is highly energy dependent.

Ultimately, our energy requirements are driven by our customer's needs and demands which in turn are directly correlated to the power and cooling required for their IT equipment. In addition, as a forwardthinking company,we further build our requirements around provisions for the future, in terms of predicted growth and advancements in technology." Lee comments on the market's evolution over the next few years.

"We feel that the market demand for energy, although slowed down recently due to the global recession, will continue to grow in the longer term. Even in the current market, factors from the data centre industry, such as the emergence of virtualisation technology and availability of bespoke solutions, continue to demand greater power requirements." "Due to the energy requirements involved with running a data centre we were conscious of the forthcoming government Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC).As such,we decided we needed to work with an experienced energy consultancy to ensure that we met the requirements of the legislation,"explained Lee.

When Telehouse's contract with its existing suppliers came up for review, the company decided to put the contract out to tender to several suppliers and consequently selected EnergyQuote incorporating John Hall Associates.

EnergyQuote trades more than £3billion of energy contracts each year, it structured all purchasing and energy strategies for Telehouse to ensure that purchases adhered to the company's low risk appetite.By monitoring the energy market, Telehouse is able to become more risk adverse and cost efficient, helping the company maintain its position as a financially robust data centre provider.

Working with EnergyQuote, Telehouse has vastly improved against its purchasing targets: energy costs in 2009 dropped to £7 million compared to £11 million the previous year, a saving of over 36%.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme EnergyQuote was also able to assist Telehouse in complying with CRC.

The CRC involvement is an important focus for Telehouse, and as a colocation provider, it falls within their defined criteria to comply. The company has implemented numerous initiatives in order to help it become energy efficient including: transforming waste heat from Telehouse West, its newest facility, to provide up to nine megawatts of energy to the local neighbourhood.

Effectively, with its CRC policy Telehouse is a good choice for current and potential customers when outsourcing their energy consuming business areas into its data centre facilities. Explained Lee:"There are particular opportunities for customers on the threshold of being within the scope for CRC Compliance to outsource their energy consuming equipment to a Green Data Centre such as Telehouse West." Moving forwards,Telehouse will be utilising the expert knowledge of EnergyQuote inc. JHAL to help it achieve CRC League Table status, as well as accreditation from The Carbon Trust. Furthermore the data centre and managed ICT provider will continue to pass cost savings on to its customers as part of its commitment to provide excellent customer service.
