Take the tube
October 1st 2007

Viessmann says that vacuum tubes are more efficient in harvesting and transferring solar energy. For example if an installation calls for 5m2 of flat panels, 3m2 of tube will give the same heat collection. This also means that tubes take up less roof space. Not every roof is perfectly aligned for catching the most sunlight. With tubes the collector within the tube can be individually tuned to the best position to compensate for the alignment of the roof.

Panels are heavy and even a small one may require scaffolding and lifting gear to get it safely positioned on the roof. Tubes can be taken, if necessary one at a time, and simply plugged into the header manifold.
