Green houses
June 1st 2008

Windmill View in Illingworth,West Yorkshire is a development of 82 properties by Bramall Construction, Synergy, Pennine Housing 2000 and the Housing Corporation. Two of the properties are the first houses in the country to be built to the recent Sustainable Code Level 4 – the Government eco-target for new homes. Level 4 requirements have been met by including solar panels, 300mm filled cavity walls, and improved U values on glazing, doors and loft space. Also installed are NIBE Heat Pumps to convert air usually expelled in normal ventilation, into energy for domestic hot water and heating.

The NIBE Fighter 360P units take air at ceiling level – warmed by the heating system, home appliances and residents' body heat– and extract the energy via a heat exchanger, expelling it into the outside atmosphere close to 0°C.

The recovered heat is passed by an indirect heating surface to a hot water tank, double-jacketed so that domestic hot water and radiators can be heated at the same time.
