Steaming ahead with boilerhouse management
December 1st 2007

MCL Energy has provided a long term steam supply, as well as boiler house management, to East Yorkshire based National Starch & Chemical for some 5+ years.

As part of its ongoing commitment to clients to appraise energy saving schemes it undertook a comprehensive review of the energy savings associated with an integral flue gas economiser at the site.

The 7t F&A 100°C package steam boiler will provide the energy for the economiser via its flue gases based on its 24/7 production and operating cycle.

This appraisal was based on actual site steam load and demand and costs per tonne to produce steam.

The payback for the investment is 2.5 years and resultant natural gas savings generated will be about 1500Mw per annum. The economiser is being provided by specialist economiser supplier, Emvertec.

The turnkey project will be managed by MCL Energy for delivery, installation and completion within the Christmas Shutdown period. Although the deadline is tight, MCL believes that, with effective planning and organisation, the project will be completed and ready for implementation by the time production is required early in 2008.

The work with National Starch & Chemical is typical of the kind of projects that MCL Energy undertakes for its portfolio of industrial and healthcare steam customers. This forms part of ongoing supply contracts with investment often being made directly by the company in the form of off balance-sheet finance.
