More of the same when it comes to saving December 1st 2004 Doncaster College is one of the largest colleges of it type in the UK, with over 25 000 students enrolled on a wide range of further and higher education courses.
MCL Energy has provided a CEM contract to cover both the Waterdale and High Melton sites since 1999.
Due to the energy savings that the Contract Energy Management type Agreement has provided the College it was decided to roll the same Agreement out to the other main town centre campus location at the College’s Church View campus. The aging solid fuel plant was replaced by modern natural gas modular LPHW plant (as part of a refurbishment project by others) and comprised of a project as follows: - • Installation of natural gas supply & new plant • New boiler plant within the central boilerhouse • Installation of BEMS (Building Energy Management System) for control and monitoring of the heating systems and site utility metering • Additional zoning of heating systems • All service & maintenance of boiler plant (including emergency call out cover) • Replacement Guarantee of all site HVAC and distribution systems The capital investment was provided by the college and under the terms of the contract MCL are responsible natural gas purchasing and then supply heat to the College at an agreed cost per MWh. Financially, the arrangement is completely transparent and the heat cost is renegotiated annually taking account of natural gas price movements.
Any savings as a result of boiler efficiency improvements are shared between MCL and the College. MCL bears the risk of any increased costs as a result of inefficient boiler operation.
The BEMS provides automatic control of the heating for all sites through a single PC in the Estates Manager’s Office and at MCL’s 24-hr bureau centre. In addition all electricity and water meters are linked to the BEMS providing automatic monitoring of utility consumption. At present daily electricity consumption is available for each building under the College’s control.
