Buildings that think for themselves
August 1st 2007

ETS, the software which designs and configures KNX (formerly European Installation Bus) intelligent building control installations, is now available in different versions.

The KNX standard was created by the KNX Association and is a system for building control and automation which is fully compliant to EN 50090, the CELNELEC European Standard for building and home electronic systems. The Standard has been adopted by many international manufacturers, meaning KNX integrators and contractors can provide control solutions by bringing together interoperable products. This compatibility ensures specifiers and building owners can create and expand KNX-based installations with minimal disruption.

KNX allows central control of all building functions including lighting, HVAC, alarms,AV systems, household appliances, blinds/solar control, façade management, metering and monitoring applications. They can also be accessed remotely for maintenance and can interface with complementary or peripheral systems.

"This technology is not just a lighting system," said Gareth Rowland, KNX board member, speaking at the launch."It creates a building that thinks for itself." "The reduced energy costs are a huge incentive," continued Gareth "applications can be on only when needed." All KNX products are backwards and forwards compatible, ensuring replacement products are available in the future.

Implementation is also non-disruptive.

The ETS3 Professional tool, which also complies with EN50090,supports KNX system design, commissioning, project documentation, diagnostics and trouble-shooting.Tester and Starter versions are also available – Tester incorporates learning programs while Starter provides more basic functionality than Professional.

The British Library in London, which has a KNX based lighting control system installed, was the venue for the official launch of KNX UK.Over 70 delegates including architects, consultants, systems integrators and the press attended the event which was hosted by KNX UK Chairman, Hugh Whalley.Other projects include Heathrow's Terminal 5 extension. The fully automated lighting system that has been developed will guide and assist passengers and be controlled and monitored from building management systems. The lighting system complies with Building Regulation Part L requirements for energy efficiency. To provide the level of control required a DALI lighting control system has been installed. DALI and KNX open protocols have been successfully integrated creating a gateway between them, enabling the two systems to communicate freely.

KNX's open platform technology has also allowed incorporation into the building management system being used on T5.
