Streetlights launched in LED version
June 1st 2008

NEMEX was the launch pad for an LED version of Marlec's Green Column, a streetlight powered from the wind and sun. " The LED life expectancy exceeds the typical life of a CFL by up to 10 times, so the initial higher outlay is paid for by just one less bulb replacement,"explains Teresa Auciello,Marlec's sales director.

Marlec says the intensity and spread of LED illumination has improved over the years. LEDs generally provide a more directional light and this reduces light pollution by concentrating the light down onto the ground rather than into the atmosphere.

The Green Column, has been available since 2000 and models were installed on the Olympic bid site. They use the combined power of wind and sun to achieve year round energy generation whatever the season or weather. Marlec says Green Columns are successful at sites where the cost of grid installation is prohibitive and the sites are sufficiently open to freely capture the wind and sun.
