Scheme stops lights going to landfill October 1st 2007 Office lighting at Gateshead's Civic
Centre is turning green – thanks to
a major programme to replace and
recycle its existing office lighting
units.
As part of the WEEE directive,
producers are responsible for
funding the collection, treatment,
and recovery of waste electrical
equipment, and distributors are
obliged to allow consumers to
return their waste equipment free
of charge.Around 250 lighting
units at the Centre have so far been
replaced, but instead of the old
ones being sent to landfill, they
have been put straight into a
special skip provided free-ofcharge
by Lumicom, who operate a
lighting fittings recycling scheme
on behalf of the lighting trade. The
new units have been supplied by
Thorn Lighting, who worked
closely with Gateshead Council to
design a purpose-made unit which
fits the centre's ceiling panels,
allowing replacements to be fitted
quickly and easily. More articles from Thorn Lighting Ltd: |
