Crushing solution for lamps
December 1st 2007

Balcan Engineering is helping Eurostar reduce the volume of its waste fluorescent lighting tubes by 80%.

Each month eight Eurostar trains operating from the Temple Mills Depot in Leyton, London, produce about 5000 fluorescent tubes that fail and this figure is expected to increase as services to other European capitals gain momentum.

Eurostar has taken delivery of the latest Balcan Low Loaded Lamp Crusher that fits over a 45- gallon drum into which it safely discharges its crushed debris. A spring closure plate prevents the escape of mercury vapour.

Eurostar has also opted to use the recycling services at Balcan's Queen's Award winning plant in Lincolnshire. This will help it cut its carbon footprint by reducing the volume of lamps by safely crushing them down by a factor of five.
