Community heating
June 1st 2008

Alfa Laval's new City Community Heating substation is designed to provide ondemand heating and hot water to apartments and single-family houses connected to a Community Heating network. Two versions are available to provide the option of direct or indirect connection to the CH network

The direct version is for use with low-pressure CH systems and provides heating direct from the main circuit to the apartment. Hot tap water is heated indirectly via a highefficiency compact heat exchanger.

In the indirect version, heat exchangers provide indirect heating of both the domestic hot water and the heating system, providing each individual dwelling with its own, discrete heating system.

Easy to install City is designed to provide plug-andplay levels of simplicity when it comes to installation.Wiring is factoryinstalled and tested and the plumbing connections thoughtfully located to enable top or bottom connection, depending on the layout of the installation site. Thanks to its compact dimensions and low weight, City can be fitted into existing dwellings without undue disruption, either onto a wall or inside a cupboard. In new build apartments or houses, it requires less space than traditional substations or individual domestic boilers. It can also be connected to under-floor heating systems through control equipment designed specifically for this purpose.

High comfort The City substation provides fully automatic individual temperature settings for central heating and hot water. Once the homeowner has set the desired temperature the system automatically regulates itself to provide optimum comfort. The energy supplier/building manager can monitor the amount of energy consumed by individual homes using a system that records the flow of heat from the central source and measures the difference between its inlet and outlet temperatures.

On the indirect version of City, two compact heat exchangers use heat from the central source to heat water for the apartment's central heating system and tap water circuits.Consequently, any leak in an individual apartment will be isolated from the principal CH network. An integrated sensor monitors and controls the tap water temperature at a predetermined level, eliminating the risk of scalding while ensuring a safe supply of hot water is constantly available.

Long-term performance The City is built to provide longterm performance. The compact heat exchanger plates and all of the associated pipe-work are manufactured in acid-resistant stainless steel.Within the cabinet, all key components are easily accessible for inspection and service.

The City heating interface unit has been developed by Alfa Laval specifically for markets such as the UK and Ireland where constant pressure on energy, the economy and the environment is changing the face of the domestic heating market
