Intelligent motor controllers

In an attempt to gain better management of its energy needs at its wastewater teratment works at Croston in North Merseyside, United Utilities has installed ABB's UMC22-FBP intelligent mtotor controllers.

The Croston treatment facility supports a poulation equivalent of around 26,000 people, treating wastewater from domestic and trade discharges.

The site was suffering from hydraulic overload and a number of areas needed upgrading, including the installation of a new grit removal plant.

IThe installation of the UMC22 controllers will allow United Utilities to monitor and control each motor through a central PLC system permitting diagnostics and remote control over the internet.

It is hoped that use of the UMC22 will provide considerable savings in operational expenditure costs.
